Express Yourself!

Wednesday, May 29, 2013

When the students first started back to school, they were assigned a great "getting to know you" project that went along with our IB unit, "Express Yourself." The students were asked to choose something they were passionate about and find a creative way to express that passion to their classmates. As we have learned, there are many ways to communicate! They could have chosen to make a video, write/sing a song, make a PowerPoint for the computer, write a story or poem, draw a poster, make a photo album, etc...the sky's the limit! It was so great to see the many creative things this class came up with when it was time to present!

Soils

Thursday, May 2, 2013

During our "What's Your Part" IB unit, we learn about the components of our earth - soils! Today we talked about the different parts that make up the topsoil and subsoil - humus, clay, and sand. We used our *4* senses to observe the three soils and took notes in our science journals. Then, we did a wet test to see if the different soils could be rolled into a ball - what a mess! The kids loved experimenting and gained new knowledge about the makeup of our earth.

Moving on up!

Wednesday, May 1 was our visit to Leon Sheffield to meet the 3rd grade teachers and to tour the school. The kids were slightly nervous about their visit, but they were excited once they got there.

When we arrived, we went to Mrs. Boyd's classroom. Her students answered our questions and told us a few things about what 3rd grade is like. We even got juice boxes and animal crackers!
Then we went into the "Little Theater" and watched a really cool video the 3rd grade students put together about their school. We learned about all the different activities they have at LSMS and the different topics they cover in third grade.
After that, we took a tour of the school. We saw the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade wings, the technology lab, the science lab, the video production room, the enrichment and FLEX classrooms, the playground, the library, the gym, and the cafeteria. It was a lot to see!
Not much later, we were boarding the buses and heading back to our school. A few kids asked if I would fail them so they could stay at Ben Davis for another year...maybe we need a few more months to be completely ready for the big school!
