Planetarium Field Trip

Thursday, September 25, 2014

Today the second graders at MacMillan took a field trip to the Gayle Planetarium in downtown Montgomery. We have just finished our first IB Unit "Let's Go Exploring" and capped off our study of the solar system by visiting the museum. We toured the facility and watched the video "Magic Tree House: Space Mission." We also got to explore the night sky and were taught how to identify different planets and constellations.

Afterward, we had a picnic at the neighboring park and spent lots of fun time playing on the playground. The kids had a blast!

Field trip fun!

Jitter Juice

Thursday, September 18, 2014

August 19 was my first day in my new second grade classroom. Because of some shifting around of teachers, I had the opportunity to move down to 2nd grade. We took my first day with them as a sort of "2nd" first day of school. We read First Day Jitters by Julie Danneburg and then made our own Jitter Juice (sherbet, sprite, and Hawaiian punch). Ask your child if they liked it!

Read to Someone

Last week, we started our third Daily 5 component, "Read to Someone." We do this to become better readers and listeners. First, we reviewed read to someone behaviors - sitting EEKK style (ask your child!), reading quietly with a whisper voice, stay in one spot, read the whole time, and get started right away. I chose partners, they chose a book, and set off to building their stamina. Great job on our first day of Read to Someone!!

Rollin with Numbers

Wednesday, September 3, 2014

Today we got our "Number Rolls" for the year. We use these to help us with place value and number order. Basically, you start with the number 1 and see how high you can number throughout the year! We've already got some that are close to 1,500!

Spaghetti Challenge

Tuesday, September 2, 2014

I love to start the school year with some team building activities. This year, I did the "spaghetti challenge" that I got a chance to do at an IB training over the summer. Rules are here -

The students had a great time planning, building, and measuring their structures. We had some creative ideas and a few groups even succeeded! Great job to all.

Math About Me

Our first 5th grade math assignment was to create a "Math About Me" poster. The students had to use math to tell us more about themselves.
