2.Animal Man comes to Ben Davis!

Today, we enjoyed a very special treat. For the tenth year in a row, Bob Tarter of the Natural History Educational Company of the Midsouth (NHECM) came with some very unique friends. He presented "Creatures of the Night" and the students learned all about nocturnal animals. We met a salamander, a raccoon, a possum, a bat, and a bobcat. The children absolutely loved the educational experience and Mr. Tarter was incredibly informative.

Check them out on Facebook!

Cathedral Caverns

Monday, April 22, 2013

In our IB Unit "What's Your Part?," we've also been learning about different landforms on our planet. The 2nd graders at Ben Davis took a field trip to Woodville, AL to visit Cathedral Caverns. It was a cold, windy day for April, but we had a great time!
We took a 1 1/2 hour tour through the caverns. It was huge! The tour guide turned all the lights off at the end and we couldn't believe how dark it was.
Afterwards, we took a quick lunch break then heading over to pan for gems. We each got a large bag filled with dirt. We dumped a little in our pan at a time and learned how to filter water through to find gemstones. The kids were thrilled with their findings! We got a few minutes to check out the gift shop then were on our back to Decatur.
Thanks to all the parents who came and helped out - it was an enjoyable day!

Earth Day!

We are currently on the transdisciplinary theme "Sharing the Planet" and our IB unit is entitled "What's Your Part?" We have been learning how our choices can effect the environment. We have started a recycling location outside our classroom and take it every other Thursday to recycle mixed paper, aluminum, and plastic. With today being earth day, we got to talking about what might happen if we don't do our part for the planet. One of the students suggested we do our part by picking up trash on the playground. We loved her suggested and quickly gathered a few trash bags and our recycling bins. Little did we realize, more than just the playground needed a little help! We walked all the way around the school and came back with a lot of litter! The kids were sad to see our campus this way. It looks like this discussion is to be continued...

Flips, Turns, and Slides Video

Thursday, April 4, 2013

We've been learning all about transformations this week for our Geometry unit. I taught this kids this cute dance/song to help them learn the difference between flips, turns, and slides. Its to the tune of Justin Beiber's "Baby" song...the boys were less than thrilled! We had fun and I filmed them today doing it!

Delano Mile Run

April 3, 2013

Today was the annual DCMS mile run at Delano Park!

We left school around 8:15 AM bundled in our jackets in the 45 degree weather to brave the wind and cold so we could finish the incremental marathon.

We wore our special race day shirts and each child had a bib with their race number and a chip that tracked their time attached to their shoe.

We all lined up at 9 AM to run our hearts out!

Below are a few pics from the beginning, middle, and end of the race.

Congrats to Bo who placed first overall with a time of 7:37 and Eliza who placed seventh overall, but was the first girl to finish with a time of 8:26.

GREAT job to all of the runners who all completed the race in 16 minutes or under. We had bottled water, juice, and cookies waiting on us a the finish line.
